Kitchen fire forces school evacuation
Students were
evacuated from Center Grove Middle School North after a small kitchen fire
Tuesday. The fire started about noon when a substitute kitchen worker put
two plastic food trays into a warmer that was designed to handle one tray, White
River Fire Department spokesman Jim Engmark said. The trays were placed too
close to the heat source, and paper on the trays caught on fire. The
worker put the fire out with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived, but
students were cleared from the building at 202 N. Morgantown Road as a
precaution, Engmark said. The worker suffered some minor smoke inhalation
but declined medical treatment. No one else was injured in the fire.
Johnson County Health Department inspectors shut down the kitchen to make sure
that smoke and fire extinguisher particulate were cleaned from the kitchen,
Engmark said. The kitchen should reopen today.
