Wood stove fire damages attic
A Center Grove area woman discovered a fire in her home's attic early Tuesday. Firefighters put the blaze out in about 15 minutes, but parts of the home sustained water and smoke damage, White River Township battalion chief Jim Engmark said. Damage is estimated at $20,000, he said. The fire started in the flue of a wood-burning stove in the home in the 3000 block of West Smith Valley Road, causing the attic to catch fire about 4:45 a.m. The woman who lives at the home woke up when she smelled a strange odor and heard the carbon monoxide detector going off, Engmark said. She got out of the house and called firefighters. Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal
