Family loses home to fire
A Center Grove area woman and her three children were left homeless after a fire destroyed their Clary Crossing apartment near State Road 135 and Stones Crossing Road, according to the Bargersville Fire Department. A neighbor smelled smoke around 6 p.m. Wednesday and called the fire department. When firefighters arrived, the doors and windows of the ground-level apartment were warm to the touch, according to a news release from the fire department. Bargersville firefighters evacuated seven apartments in the building and forced their way through the front door of the burning apartment, the release said. No one was home at the time of the fire, but firefighters found two puppies in a cage and carried the cage outside. The puppies recovered quickly and were being watched by neighbors after being rescued. Firefighters also saved snakes in an aquarium.
Resident Anita Treloar arrived at the
apartment after firefighters had spent about 30 minutes extinguishing the blaze,
the news release said. Bluff Creek Christian Church is accepting donations
for Treloar, her sons, ages 10 and 14, and her 16-year-old daughter. The
Red Cross was contacted and provided temporary housing for the family, the news
release said. Firefighters checked the building's other apartments and
allowed residents to return to their homes after about 90 minutes, the news
release said. White River Township firefighters assisted Bargersville at
the scene, the news release said. The amount of damage the fire caused was
not immediately known, nor was the cause. (Reprinted
