Haz-Mat crews plan for the worst
Crews from all over
Central Indiana convened in downtown Indianapolis earlier today to simulate a
coordinated terrorist attack involving large-scale hazardous materials releases
at several locations throughout the city. The nearly one-hundred personnel
involved in the exercise were from a variety of agencies including fire
departments, police departments, ambulance services, hospitals, emergency
management, health departments, and a multitude of other government agencies.
Crews simulated a real-time, real-resource incident that involved many agencies
covering a large spatial area. The event tested area responders and the
resources available at any given time. The session began at 9 a.m. and
lasted until around 3 p.m. Crews would stop the exercise at pre-determined
intervals to review their findings and discuss what would be done before
continuing on to the next benchmark. The combined hazardous materials team
members from the White River Township and Greenwood Fire Departments
participated in the drill.
