Icy weather leads to accidents
Although surrounding
departments were busy handling multiple automobile accidents throughout the
afternoon, the White River Township Fire Department responded to only three such
calls. Of the nineteen emergency calls yesterday, only three were auto
accidents attributed to the ice weather. One of the incidents however
required an extrication task force to remove a victim who was trapped in his
overturned truck. The accident occurred on State Road 37 just north of
Stones Crossing Road when the driver lost control of his vehicle, skidded
through the median, and overturned on the opposite side of the highway
ultimately landing in a drainage ditch. The victim was conscious but
trapped in the vehicle for about twenty minutes before firefighters could cut
him out. He was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis via
Rural/Metro Ambulance service with unspecified injuries. Traffic, which
was already slowed because of freezing rain, was delayed for a little over an
hour.
