Officials meet on impact of new tax law
A session today among 13 government boards will focus on the effect of property tax legislation on local agencies. New property tax caps will mean that local government entities such as cities, towns and schools will have to work together on what they can spend, Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson said. Recent legislation caps home-owners' taxes at 1 percent of their assessed valuation.
Henderson called for a meeting of local
boards and councils, where a financial consultant could explain what effect
borrowing money for government projects would have on the tax levies of other
local government entities. School projects in Center Grove and
Clark-Pleasant, for instance, will reduce the amount of revenue available to
Greenwood from taxpayers who live in those school districts, Henderson said.
An Umbaugh and Associates consultant will make a presentation at 3:30 p.m. today
to the Greenwood City Council, the Greenwood Park Board, the Greenwood Public
Library Board of Trustees, Johnson County commissioners, the Johnson County
Council, the Whiteland Town Council, the New Whiteland Town Council, the White
River Township Advisory Board, the White River Township fire protection district
board and school boards from Center Grove, Clark-Pleasant and Greenwood.
The meeting will take place in the city council chambers of the Greenwood City
Building, 2 N. Madison Ave.
