Woman still in burn unit of hospital
A Center Grove area woman remained in serious condition in the burn unit of an Indianapolis hospital Monday afternoon while recovering from injuries suffered in a house fire over the weekend. June Deaver, 68, suffered second- and third-degree burns on the upper right side of her body in the fire Saturday morning at 177 Innisbrooke Ave., White River Township Fire Marshal Eric Brown said. Deaver lives with her daughter and son-in-law, Roxie and Pete Convery, in their home west of Fairview and Morgantown roads. A lit cigarette sparked the fire on Deaver's bed, where she was sleeping, Brown said. The family was able to set up other living arrangements, fire department spokesman Jim Engmark said.
Roxie Convery made it out of the house and suffered minor injuries from inhaling smoke. She was released from Community Hospital South in Indianapolis a few hours after the fire, which broke out around 6:30 a.m., Brown said. Deaver was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital's burn unit and has been on a ventilator to help her breathe, Brown said. Pete Convery was not at home during the fire.
Damage was estimated at $65,000, Brown said.
The most severe damage to the house happened in the hallway and Deaver's
bedroom, while smoke and heat damage affected the rest of the house.
