Former firefighter killed in accident

Former White River Township Firefighter David R. Sherfick was killed in a head-on collision Monday in Morgan County.  Sherfick was working as a Firefighter/EMT for the Brown Township Fire Department when the ambulance he was driving was struck by an SUV that crossed the center line.  The accident occurred around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Mann Road and State Road 144.  The driver of the SUV, James R. Hoskins, was also killed in the accident.  Another fire department employee in the ambulance, Evan Kerkhof, suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Monday evening.

The two firefighters had just completed an emergency call and were returning to the station when the incident occurred.  Investigators are not yet sure why the SUV crossed the center line and into the path of the oncoming ambulance.  Officials are awaiting results of autopsies and toxicology tests.

Sherfick was a firefighter for White River township for six years from 1995 to 2001.  Hired originally as a firefighter/EMT, Sherfick was quickly promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and led the department's public education programs.  He left the department in 2001 to focus on an advancing career as a Captain with the Brown Township Fire Department.
