Chaplain to serve on Greenwood board
A
former city council candidate will
serve on the Greenwood Board of Public Works and Safety.
Mayor Charles Henderson appointed Thom Hord to the three-member board, which
oversees city projects, contracts, engineering, development and public safety
services. Hord joins Henderson and Kevin Hoover on the board. Hord,
a pastor of outreach at Community Church of Greenwood, replaces longtime board
member Warren Beville, who stepped down when his term ended last year.
Hord,
who also serves as the chaplain of the White River Township Fire Department, ran
for the Republican nomination for an at-large council seat during last year's
spring primary. He said he's always been interested in public service and looks
forward to being part of the city's growth. Henderson said he heard Hord
speak at a candidates event during the primary and was impressed with his vision
for the city. When it came time to fill the position, he said, he thought of
Hord. "He has great character, and he works for the community through his
church," Henderson said. "He uses common sense, and he's not afraid to speak his
mind." Hord, a Leadership Johnson County graduate, has served on several
church and community boards. Board of public works members earn $11,812 a
year. The board meets every two weeks. (Reprinted with
