Department goes tobacco-free
The White River Township fire department became officially tobacco-free earlier today as it ushered in the new year. The move came after nearly a year of preparations as employees worked to kick the habit in their own ways. Although all department buildings have been tobacco-free since 1992, the latest policy now covers all employees on-duty as well as all department property, regardless of indoors or out.
The department decided to
take a holistic approach to improving the overall health and safety of its
employees by both implementing the tobacco-free policy and by applying mandatory
physical fitness programs. The two are designed to help promote better living
by reducing the number of injuries and chronic diseases that may be incurred
without such programs. The department has, and will continue to offer,
individualized support for any employee who may need assistance in coping with
the new policies.
