Busy week at the Johnson County Fair
In addition to its Strawberry Shortcake tent near the midway, the White River Township Fire Department also provided firefighters for fire protection at the fair on Friday. Providing fire protection during one of the days of the fair is a tradition shared by all fire departments in Johnson County, with each department providing coverage on its assigned day. Some of the busier days are co-staffed, as in Friday, where the responsibility was shared with the New Whiteland Fire Department. Fortunately, the number of incidents reported were way down, as compared to years past. The weather cooperated, which was no doubt a contributing factor.
The department also sold Strawberry Shortcakes all week from its booth right next to the Emergency Services tent near the midway. This was the second year for the booth, which is used as a fundraiser for the department's Union. Each of the members volunteer time throughout the week to sell shortcakes for $3.00 each. All profits are then distributed to various causes, including the Hoosier Burn Camp and for educational opportunities for firefighters.
