Flag project a success
In a partnership with the American Legion Post in Greenwood, the White River Township Fire Department set up collection boxes at each fire station for old and worn out flags. The campaign, to commemorate Flag Day on June 14th, officially got under way about a month ago. During that time frame the department collected nearly 100 flags from area citizens who dropped them off. Firefighter/Paramedic Dan Huff spearheaded the project by setting up the boxes and coordinating the collection for the American Legion. "It was an amazing response", commented Huff about the number of flags brought in. "It's good to know that these flags will be disposed of in a proper and fitting manner", he added. All of the flags were turned over to the American Legion earlier today and will be properly disposed of in an upcoming ceremony. According to Federal Flag Code, when an American Flag is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Although Flag Day is tomorrow, the department will continue to take flags indefinitely and make arrangements to have them disposed of as needed. See a related story HERE.
