Firefighters assist in campaign
White River Township firefighters were on hand earlier this evening at the Center Grove High School to help raise awareness for rail crossing safety in the community. The event was in conjunction with the Jake and Travis Arms of Life campaign aimed at honoring the two young boys who lost their lives in a tragic rail crossing accident back in February.
The goal of the overall effort is two-fold. One is to raise enough funds to add flashing lights and cross arms to each of the four rail crossings in White River Township, which include Stones Crossing Road, Olive Branch Road, Smokey Row Road, and Whiteland Road. The second is to promote education as well as help raise awareness on the importance of rail crossing safety. Both efforts were in full swing this evening as community leaders and multiple public safety agencies were present to offer safety education and support of the effort.
White River Township firefighters brought multiple pieces of fire apparatus and equipment to the event including the department's Safety Trailer for patrons to visit and learn about various public safety topics. The department also provided educational materials and souvenirs for the kids who attended.
Members of the White River Township Professional Firefighters Union unanimously voted at a recent meeting to donate $1,000 toward the fundraising effort. A check was presented by Battalion Chief James Engmark during the presentation portion of the evening.
