Department hosts Awards Banquet
The White River Township Fire Department held its 55th annual Awards Banquet on Saturday in the banquet hall at the Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood. Over 140 people were in attendance that included both department employees as well as several area dignitaries. This year's event consisted of a fully-catered dinner followed by an awards presentation and a year-end video screening. The event was opened with a presenting of colors from the department's Honor Guard unit and closed with DJ-provided music and fellowship. The awards, spanning several categories, are given to department employees for service excellence and other areas of recognition in commemoration of the year 2006. The two highest awards, Firefighter of the Year and Officer of the Year, were awarded to Firefighter Steve Gorman and Captain Mark Hart respectively. Other awards included EMT of the Year, which was awarded to Firefighter Darryl Slevin, and Paramedic of the Year, which was awarded to Engineer Eric Wiseman. Additionally, a Unit Commendation award was given to the first-arriving crews of a house fire for rescuing a woman from a burning home back in March. (Photos by Tracy Hart)
