Man dies in trench accident
White River township
firefighters responded to assist the Whiteland Fire Department yesterday
afternoon when a man became buried up to his neck in a trench collapse.
Daniel Coffing, 52, of Fishers, was working to install a sewer line at the new
Speedco Truck Stop at Whiteland Road and I-65 when the accident occurred.
He had been working inside a safety box but stepped outside of it for an unknown
reason when the trench walls collapsed. Co-workers were able to free the
man after about ten minutes of digging but was not breathing. Co-workers
immediately began CPR. He was in full cardiac arrest when the Whiteland
Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and was transported to Methodist
Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The trench team from White River
was subsequently disregarded.
