Power outage has little effect
A planned power outage today affecting Station 53 was little more than an inconvenience according to officials there. The outage, planned and carried out by Johnson County R.E.M.C., got under way around 9:30 a.m. and lasted six hours. The outage was necessary in order to move transmission lines that run in front of the building in preparation for an upcoming street-widening project.
Although power was cut to the building, a generator was already in place to supply power to several critical building systems such as bay door openers, emergency lighting, and the department's alerting system. Because the computer network had to be powered down as a precautionary measure, and the fact that much of the lighting and air conditioning was not functioning, the office was closed for the period during the outage. Office operations were back open as of 4 p.m. No other problems or issues were reported during the event.
