Apartment fire blamed on smoking
A cigarette started the fire in a White River Township apartment building that displaced at least seven families. The fire at Library Park Apartments started in the home of David Williamson, who told investigators for the fire department that he fell asleep on the couch with a burning cigarette after drinking alcohol, fire department spokesman Jim Engmark said. Williamson’s back was burned by the blaze. He has been released from the hospital, Engmark said. The cigarette could have smoldered on the couch for hours, and the apartment’s smoke detector was unplugged, Engmark said. When the fire was discovered, a female resident ran to a neighbor’s apartment, who called 911 about 4:40 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters evacuated the residents as the fire went up the walls and into an attic area shared by all apartments. The complex is located east of State Road 135 near Smith Valley Road. Seven apartments were considered a total loss, and more that 20 units sustained smoke or water damage, Engmark said. Insurance adjusters for residents and Ohio Property, the company that owns the apartment building, have visited this week to prepare damage estimates, Engmark said. The Red Cross assisted displaced families. See a related story HERE. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
