Fire destroys apartments in WRT

A fire spread through a White River Township apartment complex early Sunday morning, destroying at least eight apartments and sending one person to the hospital.  Residents of Library Park Apartments, 1625 Library Blvd., woke to firefighters banging on their doors before 5 a.m. Sunday as a blaze that started in a first-floor apartment moved through the attic in the building.  The complex is located off State Road 135 near Smith Valley Road.  One resident was treated for smoke inhalation at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis and released, and another was treated on the scene for minor burns.

White River Township firefighters responded to a call at 4:40 a.m. Sunday and found a first-floor apartment near the rear of the complex engulfed in flames, said Jim Engmark, White River Township Fire Department battalion chief.  The fire went up the wall and into an attic that is shared by all of the apartments, Engmark said.  Firefighters were able to wake and evacuate residents of the complex before about 14 of the 32 units were damaged.  Eight to 10 apartments were destroyed, Engmark said. Only apartments on the far east and west ends of the building were not damaged.  The Red Cross was called to the scene to help residents find shelter and food.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no damage estimate was available Sunday night, Engmark said.  Greenwood and Perry Township fire departments also were on the scene.
