Firefighters perform search training

Captain Joe Settles of the Special Operations Division put on a class known as "Large Areas Search" designed to educate firefighters on how to properly search large “big box” style buildings.  This training is very important in the fact that many jurisdictions, including White River Township, are encountering many large commercial structures that are being built.  In the training, designed to simulate an actual scenario, the officer and two to three firefighters are sent in together.  The officer is in charge of the guide line in which he or she will tie loops into so that the other firefighters can attach their search line onto.  The crew will then conduct 360 degree searches on both sides of the guide line.  Once they complete their searches, the firefighters move up to the next loop in the guideline and search again.  This continues until a victim is found or they are told to evacuate by the control firefighter.  For more information on Large Area Search training, contact Captain Joe Settles.
