Heavy snow blankets district
Over a foot of snow
fell over the past twenty-four hours bringing travel in the area to a near
standstill. The snow began on Wednesday morning and by Thursday, the snow
had tapered off to flurries, but not before leaving up to three to four feet
deep drifts in many places. County highway crews began digging out as soon
as the snow began piling up. The fire department had responded to several
calls over the period, but "nothing out of the ordinary", said Battalion Chief
Carey Slauter. One ambulance was briefly stuck in the snow but no fire
apparatus responses were seriously delayed because of the weather. By
Thursday evening all of the major thoroughfares in the area had been plowed,
salted, and sanded enough to make emergency travel possible to all areas of the
district. The fire department maintains its own plow to move snow away
from the fire houses and approach-ways.
