Children's Toy Drive a success
Today concluded the
2004 Annual Children's Toy Drive with the final Christmas gifts being delivered.
The Johnson County United Way, Meijer, and the fire department have teamed up
for the third year in a row to help collect, wrap, and deliver Christmas gifts
to those children in the fire district. The United Way collects names of
those individuals who may be in need of some help with the holidays and then
forwards the list to the fire department. Off-duty firefighters then spend
one week early in December collecting gifts earmarked for specific children at
the Meijer store in Greenwood. All of the gifts are then wrapped at a
"wrapping party" (see photos from December 16th below) and then delivered via
fire truck the week before Christmas. This year, the campaign helped 101
children in 33 families which met the goal of 100% of the names sponsored.
Special thanks to all those who helped make this year an overwhelming success
including Wal-Mart, who made a $500 cash donation. See related story
