New recruits begin work

       The White River Township Fire Department entered a new era today as it was the first official day for twenty new full-time firefighter recruits.  Today’s start to the training academy is a culmination of several years of hard work and diligence by the department's staff that has finally come to fruition.  The new recruits will fill several roles within the department including several management positions as lieutenants as well as fifteen engineer roles.  A lieutenant is primarily responsible for individual crews of three or four firefighters and engineers are responsible for driving, pumping, and otherwise operating the department’s equipment. 

The recruits will spend the next eight weeks together attending the training academy covering many facets of the fire service from basic firefighting to advanced emergency medical service issues.  Each day will begin with a full exercise and health regimen followed by six to eight hours of classroom and hands-on instruction.  The academy concludes on November 30th with a graduation ceremony and with each of the recruits beginning their assigned shifts during the first week of December. 

Below are the names of each of the new recruits and their new job title.  Many of the individuals hired have many years of experience in the fire service with some even coming from the part-time ranks of the White River Township Fire Department.  All of the new recruits will be on hand at this week’s open house at Fire Department Headquarters at 850 S. Mullinix Road.  The open house is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th, 2004 and runs from 5pm to 8pm in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week.
