Just Having Some Fun
Teams compete for cakes in the cake walk/roll at a summer fair Saturday at the Church at Stones Crossing in White River Township. Up to 150 people enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, karaoke and carnivals sponsored by Unity of Indiana and Putnam County Comprehensive Services. From left are Anita Jewell and her mother, Marty; Jimmy Main and Unity of Indiana staff member Bill Spangler; and Kara Ducker and her mother, Debbie. White River Township Fire Department's Station 53 brought a fire engine and passed out stickers. Unity of Indiana is operated by a Johnson County family and provides educational personal and professional support to people with autism, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and mental retardation, said Kathyleen E. Tompkins, president and chief executive officer. Those in the program are provided community-based services through the Indiana Medicaid waiver program. Many participants were previous residents at Central State Hospital in Indianapolis or Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded, Tompkins said. Information: Tompkins, 889-2777.
