Chase, crash close State Road 135
An armed robbery suspect fleeing Indianapolis caused a three-car accident on State Road 135, closing the road for several hours Wednesday. The chase ended when the suspect, Vernan Maxey, 21, of Indianapolis, struck a Honda head-on about 3 p.m. on State Road 135 between Fry and Fairview roads, according to WISH-Channel 8 Web site. After the crash, Maxey jumped out of his vehicle and tried to flee police. He left behind a 5-year old child, according to the Web site. Greenwood Police Chief Al Hessman said a police dog chased after Maxey and caught him, allowing Marion County sheriff's deputies to arrest him. WISH reported that shots were fired at the fleeing suspect by Marion County deputies. The high-speed chase started after Maxey allegedly tried to rob a homeowner at gunpoint in the 5000 block of Delmar on the west side of Indianapolis. The homeowner ran away, and Maxey reportedly fired one shot at the homeowner, which missed, according to WISH-Channel 8. The child was taken to Community Hospital South to be checked out, according to the Web site. No serious injuries were reported, Hessman said.
