Youth Volunteer Day
Fourteen
Center Grove Middle School Central students and two adult chaperones
participated in Youth Volunteer Day today at fire department headquarters.
The annual event is presented by the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Johnson
County and is a project designed to link youth, families, and communities
together. The students arrived at the fire station at 9 a.m. and began
volunteering their time and skills helping the firefighters conduct their daily
routines. Some of the tasks included washing apparatus, dusting, mopping,
and cleaning out the refrigerator. A few students even helped prepare a
few rooms for painting. "The students really enjoyed interacting with the
firefighters and seeing them in their daily element" said Steve Hamilton, one of
the chaperons. "I think it's good for them to see professional
firefighters right here in their own community", he added. The day
concluded about 2 p.m. with a return to the final period of classes. The
firefighters were extremely grateful for the help and enjoyed a shortened day of
crew duties.
