New middle school close to opening

The new Center Grove Middle School North is close to be able to accept staff and members of the public.  Earlier this month, inspectors from the White River Township Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal compiled lists of items to be corrected before they would clear the building for occupancy.  The lists included the need to clear debris from hallways, replace damaged sprinkler heads, install missing emergency lights, post emergency escape plans and reduce the height of some toilets to comply with disability laws.  Last week, school corporation maintenance workers were told to remove items from the building after local inspectors found them bringing in files, books and other potentially combustible items, which are not allowed without an occupancy permit.  "We understand they need to start setting their classes up," said Eric Brown, the White River department's fire prevention chief.  "We want the building to be safe before they start doing that."  County inspector Neil Trisler said he would tour the 210,000-square-foot building today.  If previous concerns have been addressed, a temporary occupancy permit could be issued in time for employees to start moving items in Wednesday.  A dedication is set for 4 p.m. August 10 at the building, 202 N. Morgantown Road.  (portions of this article reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
