Pancake breakfast a success

        The first annual White River Twp Fire Department Pancake Breakfast was a huge success.  Although twice as many people came out to participate than planned, the event went off with only a few minor glitches.  The weather cooperated until about mid-morning when it began to rain.  Many joked as it was said the last time it rained was during our Strawberry Festival back in June.  "We learned a lot and will now be better prepared for next year", said Lt. Steve Rowland, who headed up the event.

     All proceeds go to the fire department's Children's Gift Fund, as special fund used to buy Christmas presents for children who might otherwise go without.  In 2001, the Fire Department was honored to assist the Center Grove School Corporation in obtaining gifts for these local children.  These gifts consisted of toys that the child had requested and clothes that the child needed.  Fire Department personnel, along with students from the Center Grove School Corporation, worked gift tables at the Greenwood Meijer store.  Cards were handed out to patrons who volunteered to participate.  Inside this card, was the child's first name, age and clothing sizes, as well as two or three toys that the child had requested.  The participants would purchase an item or two off of the list and return the gifts and the card to the table, where they were wrapped.  The gifts were delivered to the children just a few days before Christmas.  In 2001, we were able to help 140 children.  Without this important program, many children would have gone without Christmas presents to open, not to mention much needed clothing items.

      The fire department would like to thank all of those individuals and businesses who participated in this years Pancake Breakfast and look forward to seeing everyone again next year.  The tentative date for the 2003 Pancake Breakfast is Saturday, September 13, 2003.
