WRT medics pedaling

In case any runners took a fall during Saturday’s 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, local medics were on hand to pedal to the rescue.  Following the lead of some area hospitals and ambulance services, the White River Township Fire Department has formed an emergency medical service bicycle team.  A well-equipped bike team shares many of the capabilities of an ambulance crew but can respond even more quickly at crowded public events.  The Mini was the first outing for the White River Township group, but it plans to offer its services for local parades, festivals and other gatherings. The work is a volunteer service, though the team may solicit donations to pay for equipment and training.  “We want the whole community to know that we’re available” Lt. Jim Engmark said. Other firefighter/EMTs and paramedics on the team include Casey Arkins, Carey Slauter, Greg Maxwell, Brian McRoberts, Jeff Wilson, Scott Alexander, Jory Cox, Jason Arkins, Rick Cooley, Mike Shoemaker, Steve Rowland, Andy Martindale, Jake Kocher, Jerry Harder and Tony Slusher.   In the photo below, members Jim Engmark, left, Jason Arkins, center, and Casey Arkins are among some of the volunteers for the department’s new emergency medical bicycle team.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
