Scam artists use fire department as their cover
White
River Township’s fire chief has a message for residents: Beware of anyone
collecting money on behalf of the fire department. “We do not go door-to-door,”
Chief Mike Tibbetts said. But someone has been. A resident called the
department Friday to report that two young women had come to his front door
around 8 a.m., claiming they were collecting money for the firefighters. The
solicitors said they had spoken previously with the resident’s wife.
Suspicious, the man reached for a phone to check with his wife. When he turned
back around, the women were driving away from the house near Stones Crossing
Road and State Road 135, Tibbetts said. Whatever they wanted the money for, it
has nothing to do with the fire department, the chief said. He asked that
residents report any similar incidents to the fire department or sheriff’s
department.
