Intersection receives Opticomm system
The first intersection in White River Township to
be outfitted with the Opticomm traffic control system is at State Road 37 and
Smith Valley Road. This system allows approaching emergency vehicles (fire
apparatus only at this time) to "trip" the light and turn it green in
the direction of their travel. This system greatly reduces accidents by
slowing and stopping cross traffic in time for the emergency vehicle to pass
through. The signal is tripped by a special strobe emitter that is enabled
whenever the vehicle's emergency lighting is illuminated and is in
"drive". The total cost to outfit one intersection is
approximately $20,000 and will be automatically included on any further light
installations in the township. The system was especially crucial at Smith
Valley and 37 because of the new fire station located there and its proximity to
the intersection.
