Unattended curling iron leads to fire
A White River Township family is looking for temporary shelter this week after a Friday afternoon fire damaged their two-level home. A hot curling iron ignited a fire about 3:45 p.m. in the upstairs bedroom at the home of the Shawn Mason family, 5259 Bancroft Lane, said Lt. Joel Thacker of the White River Township Fire Department. Mason and his wife and children were home at the time of the fire. Mason’s teen-age son noticed the fire and attempted to extinguish it with water before firefighters arrived, Thacker said. As the flames grew, the family evacuated the house, he said. No one was injured. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the bedroom, but smoke and water caused serious damage to the home, Thacker said. The family stayed with relatives over the weekend.
