Fireman's Olympics great

The following is a letter to the editor that has been reprinted with the permission of the Daily Journal.

To the editor:

I would like to say thanks to the Johnson County Fair Board and the others who are responsible for bringing back the Fireman’s Olympics that were conducted Wednesday night at the Johnson County Fair. For those who were there I believe you can say that you got your two dollars worth. For those who weren’t, don’t forget this next year; I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.  I don’t know of any activity at the fair where the competition is any higher than it was Wednesday night. These firefighters fought tooth and nail for every point they earned and it was fantastic to watch. But as everyone that was there watched, even though they fought each other for several hours, they ended in a very wet show of friendship — and proved to this county once and for all that no matter how hard and far you look, you will not find a better group of firefighters than those we have right here in Johnson County.  I have always been very proud of my connection with this group, but after Wednesday night this feeling has grown even more concrete.  I would like to congratulate the White River Township Fire Department for finishing first in the competition. This team was very well practiced and ready for the event and very much proved they deserved the title that they received. And last, I would like to thank another group of young men who are a little closer to me, these being the members of the team for the Amity Fire Dept., Capt. David Porter, Lt. Chad Gorrell, Brian Hedrick, Bobby Price and John Harnett. These five proved that with hard work and dedication they were up t the task, placing second in the competition.  I only hope that the Fair Board will see that this is a successful venture and that it will become a yearly event. Thanks to all the competitors for a fun-filled evening that many enjoyed.

Jackie Brockman, Assistant Chief
Amity Fire Department
