Center Grove blaze won't delay classes
A smoky fire at a construction site at Center Grove Middle School on Saturday kept firefighters busy for hours but won’t interfere with classes, firefighters said. The fire began about 1:15 p.m. on the roof of an addition in the early stages of construction at the north end of the building, said Scott Cassin, a division chief with the White River Township Fire Department. Squares of a Styrofoam-like roof insulation product apparently caught fire when welders overheated the sheet-metal roof they were stored on, Cassin paid. A large number of the foam squares were stacked on the roof awaiting Installation. The blaze spread quickly, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air. Firefighters from Bargersville, Perry Township and Greenwood spent about three hours helping White River Township extinguish the blaze, at the corner of Stones Crossing and Morgantown roads. Cassin said the occupied part of the building wasn’t damaged and that most of the damage to the construction site involved materials and the sheet metal roof. No dollar estimate was available.
