Firefighter 'exemplifies dedication'
Kevin Skipper is known for even when he’s not getting paid for it. Skipper, 23, was presented the White River Township Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year award Jan. 24. The award is voted on by the department’s firefighters and given to someone who exemplifies dedication. Lt. Troy Wymer said Skipper stood out. “I think Kevin exemplifies dedication to community service,” Wymer said. “He is one who addresses issues for the Fire Department on his off-time.” Skipper has spent countless off-duty hours doing maintenance on the tire trucks for free. He graduated from Center Grove in 1992 and later attended the American Trans Air Aviation Training Academy for maintenance. But he decided the field wasn’t for him and became a firefighter. His father, Ray, is a captain for the Perry Township Fire Department. Also honored by the department were Division Chiefs Eric Brown and Jeremy PeIl, Officers of the Year; Scoff Alexander and Sean Atkinson, Reserve Firefighters of the Year; and Capt. Carey Slauter, 10-Year Service Award. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
