On-duty deputy seriously injured in car accident
A Johnson County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured in a car accident Monday night in White River Township. Deputy James Engmark suffered a broken left leg and neck and back pain in the two-car collision. He was taken by EMAS ambulance to Methodist Hospital. The accident was reported at 7:56 p.m. at Summit Ridge Road and Peterman Road (County Road 400W) near the Fairview Heights subdivision. According to Sheriff’s Department spokesman Deputy Tom Shively, Engmark was on duty in his patrol car, southbound on Peterman Road. A 1993 Buick LeSabre driven by B. Joann Lawson, 67, was northbound in the 100 block of Peterman, attempting to turn left onto Summit Ridge Road. The Buick struck the sheriff’s car on the driver’s side, ripping the door off. The squad car traveled about 200 yards before stopping. Engmark was semi-conscious at the scene, Shively said. Lawson, who reportedly told police she didn’t see the sheriff’s car, suffered chest pain and was taken to Methodist. Her passenger, Ernest Lawson, 67, went to the hospital for observation. Engmark is an eight-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
