Suspects sought in arson fire

Police are searching for suspects in a fire-setting spree early Thursday morning that caused more than $50,000 damage to a Greenwood business.  White River township firefighters were called to Papa John’s, 259 S. State Road 135, at 12:54 a.m. on a Dumpster fire.  An hour later, firefighters had to return after the building was set ablaze. The fire also caused heavy smoke damage to the adjacent Gifts Unlimited.  Owner Tina Fearin said all the merchandise was destroyed. She hopes to reopen the business in three to four weeks in the same location.  Fearin has not received an official damage estimate. Fire Marshal Eric Brown said the second fire started in the rear of the building near a privacy fence.  “We have ruled out all accidental causes,” Brown said.  Brown believes cardboard boxes and paper found at the scene were used in the fire, along with some type of accelerant. Samples were sent to a lab and are expected back today. Police are also investigating another fire set early Thursday morning at a home on Stoneybrook Drive. Two wicker chairs and a trash can were set ablaze, doing minimal damage, said Greenwood Fire Chief Steve Dhondt. The flames darkened the side of the house, but it did not catch fire. Greenwood Police Chief Bob fine said he believes the house fire is related to the Papa John’s business fire.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
