Fire forces Meijer evacuation
A grease fire Monday in the bakery area at the Meijer Superstore on State Road 135 in White River Township forced a partial evacuation of the building, said firefighters, but it resulted in no injuries or damage. The grease fire started about 4:30 p.m., said firefighter Scott Coombs, when employees were cutting up solid slabs of grease and loading them into a large deep-fryer in the bakery area at the southeast corner of the building. Somehow the grease ignited before it had a chance to dissolve, Coombs said, resulting in a fire that generated a large amount of smoke. “They did have quite a bit of smoke through the building,” Coombs said. “It had the potential to be (worse than it was), but their people are really sharp about that.” Fire Chief Scott Cassin said employees extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived.
