Electrical short blamed for Thursday home fire
An
electrical short is blamed for a fire that heavily damaged a house Thursday
night in the Mount Pleasant subdivision In White River Township. The fire
was reported at 8:02 p.m. at the Jack Bobbins residence at 1277 Mount Pleasant
East Drive. Capt. Carey Slauter of the White River Township Fire Department
said the fire was caused by a short in the wiring above the fuse box, in a
garage attached to the house. Slauter said Bobbins’ wife was home alone
when the fire started. She sought help from a neighbor before calling the fire
department, Slauter said. “They got a fire extinguisher and tried to put it
out,” Slauter said. When they realized that would not be possible, they called
the fire department from the neighbor’s house. Firefighters from Greenwood and
Bargersville were called to help fight the fire and provide water, since there
are no fire hydrants in the Mount Pleasant addition. Firefighters were at the
scene, near State Road 37 and County Line Road, for about five hours. The
one-story house, built into the side of a hill, suffered extensive damage. “It
burned the roof off and there was fire damage through most of the house,”
Slauter said. The rooms that were not burned suffered smoke and water damage.
Slauter estimated the damage at $50,000 to $65,000. See a related story
