White River fire station site
White
River Township Volunteer Fire Department has found a Greenwood site for its new
fire station after a search that lasted more than a year. The department has
bought land at Meridian Parke Shopping Center for the $300,000 fire station.
Last year, the department was refused a zoning variance needed to build the
station a mile further west on Fairview Road. The new site is zoned to allow a
fire station, although construction plans will need Greenwood Plan Commission
approval. Plans call for a three-bay equipment building with living quarters for
up to eight firefighters. Construction could be finished this year, White River
Township Fire Chief Howard Bennis said. Greenwood Fire Chief Paul Kite voiced
disappointment over the choice of the site. He said it is too close to Greenwood
Station No. 2.
