Trailer fire leaves county man homeless

A Friday afternoon fire that destroyed a trailer left a White River Township man homeless. Fire quickly consumed Bob Glancy’s trailer at lot 38 in the Glendale Park Trailer Court west of the railroad tracks off County Line Road. White River Fire Department public information officer Pat McDaniel said the trailer was a total loss. Damage to the trailer’s contents was estimated at $1,000. Trailer park residents who witnessed the blaze said they saw flames and smoke shooting from the mobile home shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. “Flames were coming up through the living room ceiling,” said next -door neighbor Becky Roll. “It was really flaming. Fire was coming out of the front window,” said Barbara Gunter, who lives several trailers from Glancy’s home. Glancy was not inside the trailer when neighbors discovered the blaze. Glancy was visiting Tim White’s trailer when a neighbor ran over to tell Glancy his trailer was burning. Glancy ran to his home and opened the front door. Witnesses said the flames grew in intensity as soon as Glancy opened the door. Glancy backed away from the home, but his neighbors attempted to fight the fire before White River Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived. One neighbor, Buddy Sims, 22, was overcome by smoke pouring from Glancy’s trailer. “I heard a big boom and the smoke just rolled out and hit me.” Sims said. About that time, firefighters arrived. Sims was taken to Community Hospital South where he was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Firefighters soon put out the flames, but the trailer was a total loss. Heat from the fire melted skirting at the bottom of Roll’s trailer, broke a window, and melted plastic on her air conditioner. White River Township firefighters had not determined a cause for the fire Friday night nor where it started. McDaniel said the fire department would contact Johnson County Red Cross for donations of clothing for Glancy. The fire victim stayed at a friend’s home Friday night.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
