Fire district board to be named
County
commissioners are expected to name a five member board Monday to guide the newly
formed fire protection district in northern White River Township. The district
will cover the same boundaries now served by the White River Township Volunteer
Fire Department north of Stones Crossing Road (County Road 700N), but excluding
areas within the city limits of Greenwood. The district was approved by
commissioners in a special meeting October 7. Instead of relying on tax dollars
supplied by the township trustee, the district will allow the Fire Department to
set a tax rate for residents living within the district. White River Fire Chief
Bob Wehrman has said the district will allow the department to plan for growth
of the township and the department. The department also hopes to shorten
response times by keeping a paid firefighter at the station. Commissioners have
received a list of names and resumes of people fire department officials would
like to see on the board. Area residents also have drawn up a list.
Commissioners are slated to vote on the matter at 9 a.m. Monday in the
courthouse annex, 86 W. Court St. in Franklin.
