White River firemen begin fund drive
The
White River Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fund drive
Saturday, starting at the department’s station house. Members of the
department will gather at the White River Station at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to pick
up letters they will be taking door-to-door informing residents of the fund
drive. “I expect that we’ll cover about 5,000 homes in White River Township,”
said White River Assistant Fire Chief Pat McDaniel. “But, I don’t think we’ll
get to all of them in one day. It will probably take us a week to get all the
letters delivered.” McDaniel said anyone wanting to help deliver the letters
may join the group at the fire station Saturday morning. She explained the
reason for the fund drive is to supplement the money allocated to the department
through a contract with White River Township Trustee Bob Kelso. There are nine
townships in Johnson County, and each has a trustee who is an elected official
responsible for poor relief, the fire department and the cemeteries. According
to McDaniel, the most the department has raised through previous fund drives is
$18,000, but she hopes this drive will bring in $20,000.
