Firemen seek more volunteers
Hoping
to find about 12 new members, the White River Township Volunteer Fire Department
has started a membership drive. Flyers asking for new male and female
volunteers were handed out to people attending the Center Grove-Indian Creek
high schools basketball game Wednesday night. The flyer contains a blank which
prospective members age 18 and over may fill out and return to Assistant Fire
Chief Pat McDaniel. A membership drive committee of Marlene Sutton, Susie
Faulkner, and Bill Simmonds prepared 5,000 flyers which they plan to distribute
throughout the area which the fire department serves. White River Volunteer
Fire Department serves township businesses and residents north of Stones
Crossing Road. It is estimated 20,000 people live or work in the service area.
Mrs. McDaniel said she hopes the campaign will do well to add to the
department’s present membership of 17, the lowest number of members in several
years. At times this year, only one White River firefighter was available
during the daylight hours. White River manpower was so short at a Dec. 9 house
fire in Windsong Estates that the department members allowed teenagers in a
firefighting training program to help fight it. Greenwood and Bargersville Fire
Department members also assisted in fighting that fire. The department has
mutual aid agreements with Greenwood and Bargersville Volunteer Fire
Departments, but fire department members believe they need more White River
firefighters in order to properly serve the township.
