Blaze in flue damages home
A fire in a fireplace flue extensively damaged a home in White River Township west of Greenwood today. Robert Wehrman, White River fire investigator, said David Matern was awakened by crackling and popping noises shortly before 1 a.m. and escaped without injury. Wehrman said the roof was burning when the fire apparatus arrived at the one-story house. Damage was estimated at more than $50,000. No injuries were reported. Fire units were at the house until 4:45 am. White River was assisted by Greenwood and Bargersville fire fighters. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
