Residents like White River
A
Purdue University survey shows most of White River Township residents like the
areas’ small town atmosphere, school system, and lower tax rates and are in no
hurry to move away. The survey which polled 360 White River Township residents
was conducted by Purdue University and the Johnson County Cooperative Extension
Service at the request of the White River Township Coalition. The 12- page
survey, returned by 61 percent of the 593 residents who received it in November,
showed 60 percent of the respondents worked in Marion County. Two-thirds of the
households surveyed have annual incomes of more than $25,000. While 82 percent
of the respondents said they would be reluctant to move from the township, many
said they would be in favor of more police protection and fire hydrants.
Respondents said they would be willing to pay higher taxes in order to obtain
the upgraded services. About 66 percent agreed there is a strong need to widen
Ind. 135, the main traffic artery through the township. Most said, however, they
are not willing to bear the cost of widening the road. Of those responding to
the survey, two-thirds were men, 87 percent were married and three-fourths were
younger than 55. Most of the respondents also oppose annexation to Greenwood or
incorporation as a separate community. The lightest opposition to annexation to
Greenwood was among residents living nearest to the Greenwood city limits.
