Township Firefighter Pat McDaniel was well-prepared last week when she and
fellow fireman Howard Bennis spoke to several Center Grove school children about
fire prevention and safety. Her presentation to the children was complete to
the finest detail. But Mrs. McDaniel was obviously taken aback a bit when one
of the children asked a question she wasn’t quite prepared for. Going into
detail about what the children should do if a fire ever broke out at their
homes, Mrs. McDaniel told them they should call the fire department as soon as
possible. That call she said, should not be made from inside their burning
homes, but from a neighbor’s house. However, a wide-eyed first grader in the
first row did spot a problem. “What if their house is on fire too?” he
wondered. After a bit of hesitation, Mrs. McDaniel responded quietly, “We’ll
all really hope that doesn’t happen.”
