CGMS students become fire department cadets
Do
you enjoy watching “Code Red” and “Emergency” on television? Several Center
Grove Middle School students have stopped watching and started doing. Kerry
Bancroft, Noel Poindexter, and Tim Burgess, eighth grade students at CGMS, are
Cadets at the White River Township Volunteer Fire Department. These cadets have
volunteered their time and work evenings until 9 p.m. Their job includes
assisting on large fires, and administering first aid. The boys feel that to be
successful cadet, the responsibilities are to show up on time, to know what to
do and to know when to do it. Tim, Kerry, and Noel, agree that they like being
Cadets because they enjoy helping people. “I enjoy doing this because I’m doing
something to serve the community,” explained Kerry. The program has helped the
boys make decisions about their future. “ I hope to become a part-time E.M.T. or
paramedic, but I wouldn’t want to do it for a living,” said Tim. Noel feels that
becoming a cadet he has gained the valuable experience of fighting fires and
using first aid techniques. By setting an example, Noel, Tim, and Kerry hope
others get will get enthused and join such programs. If you are interested in
becoming a cadet and would like more information, talk to a cadet or call the
White River Township Volunteer Fire Department.
