Fireman and police officer honored by Greenwood VFW
A Greenwood policeman and a White River Township volunteer firefighter were honored Tuesday as the Policeman and Fireman of the Year by the Greenwood chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Capt. John Myers, 41, was selected as the Policeman of the Year by a VFW committee from three police officers nominated by the department. Myers is a 17-year veteran of the police department and supervises the afternoon and day shifts. Bob Wehrman, 40, is the assistant chief of the White River Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in getting fire hydrants into the township and was elected this year to serve on the Johnson County Firemen’s Association advisory board. He is employed at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis and lives at 975 N. Bluff Road, Greenwood. Also honored at the ceremony at the Greenwood VFW hall were two Greenwood Community High School seniors. Bart Ripperger, 17, placed first in the Voice of Democracy essay contest and Jim Kern, 17, came in second. Ripperger also placed second in the district contest. Bart is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ripperger, and Jim is the son of Tom Kern. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
