Quick thinking neighbors may have helped save home
Quick
thinking neighbors may have helped save a home in the Windsong addition in White
River Township from being destroyed by fire Tuesday. The fire, which started
about 8:15 p.m. in a garage attached to the T.L. Feller home, 339 Windsong,
caused about $20,000 to $30,000 damage, according to fire reports. Gasoline
leaking from a car Feller was working on ignited when it came in contact with a
water heater in the garage, reports said. The car was parked in the garage at
the time. Neighbors at first attempted to put out the blaze with hand
extinguishers. Failing that, they shut the garage door, thus slowing the fire’s
spread, according to White River Township Fire Department spokesperson Pat
McDaniel. Firefighters then were able to contain the blaze to the garage
adjacent to the kitchen, Mrs. McDaniel said. Beverly Feller, 40, was treated and
released from Johnson County Memorial Hospital for leg burns suffered at the
beginning of the fire. A White River Township firefighter, Damon Duncan, 21, was
treated at the scene after being overcome by heat and smoke. Fire units from
Perry Township in Marion County and from Greenwood and Bargersville in Johnson
County assisted White River firefighters. Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies and
Indiana State Police assisted with crowd control. Firefighters remained on the
scene about three hours. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily
