Barn with corn, hay destroyed

       An early morning blaze destroyed a White River Township barn and it’s contents today. The barn, located on Paddock Road south of Smith Valley Road, is owned by Eldar Hargis, Greenwood, route four. According to Robert Wehrman, White River Fire Chief, the fire destroyed about 300 bales of hay and an undetermined amount of corn stored in the barn. The fire was reported at 5:30 a.m. One horse who, was severely burned in the blaze had to be destroyed, Wehrman said. Wehrman said 12 men using four trucks battled the fire for a half hour before extinguishing it. He estimated damage at $5,000. Firefighter Steve Shelton was bitten by a dog at the scene and required treatment at the hospital. Cause of the blaze is undetermined.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
